IMC & hackmanite in the headlines during New Year
IMC and hackmanite were in the headlines right before the New Year’s Eve. First, on Friday 29/12 there was an interview with Prof. Mika on Yle’s radio news, and the next day Yle published the article “In Turku, a special stone that changes color and glows in the dark is being researched – soon a sensor built from it will go into space” related to our project with the European Space Agency.

Happy New Year!
2023 has been the best year for IMC: we have the best scientific impact ever in publications, both individually and in total. Many new, enthusiastic students joined our group and we also received new research funding. Big thanks also goes to our stakeholders and partners, with whom the fruitful cooperation will continue in the future. Thank you everyone and a very happy new year 2024!

We have just received great news that the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation has granted a two-year project for us to study hackmanite’s optical energy storage and light emission properties. Here is a news about it (in Finnish):

Kemistin työkalupakin kahdeksannessa osassa professori Mika Lastusaari ja tohtorit Anssi Peuronen ja Sami Vuori esittelevät kannettavan värispektrometrin toimintaa. Hyvää joulua! 🌲
Huom! Havaittu väri riippuu aina siitä, missä valossa asiaa tarkastellaan. Tämä värispektrometri käyttää standardivaloa, joka vastaa kesäisen keskipäivän aurinkoa. Laboratoriossamme sen sijaan on tavallinen valkoinen LED-valaistus. Sen värintoistoindeksi on 83/100, mikä tarkoittaa sitä, etteivät kaikki värisävyt näytä sen valossa samalta kuin kesäisen keskipäivän auringonvalossa. Siksi voi olla, että tässä tutkittu hackmaniittijauhe on laboratoriovalaistuksessa enemmän violetti kuin pinkki, vaikka standardivalossa asia on päinvastoin.

Kemistin työkalupakin seitsemännessä osassa tohtori Minnea Tuomisto esittelee Lasersäde-labrassa sijaitsevaa lähi-infrapunalaseria.
Meet Josh, a master’s project student from Durham
Introducing Joshua Baggott from Brighton, UK, who came to IMC this autumn from Durham University. Josh comments: “I came to the IMC to do my masters project because of your hackmanite research, with the material itself being really interesting to me, particularly because of its versatility.“
IMC course labwork finished
The Materials chemistry and sustainable development course exercises were completed yesterday. In the first lab work, metals were identified by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and separated by precipitation, and in the second work hackmanites were prepared and their purity was studied by powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and color change and luminescence properties by UV lamps and reflectance spectrometry.
The enthusiastic students and also the instructors performed the tasks excellently, and the general comment was that the excercises were interesting.
Honorary Citizenship awarded to Ian
Dr. Ian Pompermayer Machado is leaving IMC soon, so today Mika and Ari presented him with IMC’s highest honor, which has been given to fewer people than the Nobel Prize: the IMC Diploma of Honorary Citizenship i.e. Civis IMC Honoris Causa.
