Kemistin työkalupakki: osa 5 ja 6

OSA 5: LUMINESENSSISPEKTROMETRI

This is a video series made for Finnish-speaking chemistry students for introductory purposes.

OSA 1: TERVETULOA

OSA 2: SCHLENK-LINJA

Kemistin työkalupakin toisessa osassa dosentti Ari Lehtonen esittelee isosta labrasta löytyvän Schlenk-linjan.

IMC’s visit to Aalto’s ALD/MLD research center

Yesterday was a nice day for IMC as we had the honor to visit Aalto University for collaboration. Doctoral Researcher Amr Ghazy (second from right) hosted the lab excursion by showing us how atomic layer deposition and molecular layer deposition are conducted at Aalto. IMC’s BSc students Aino Kärsämänoja (second from left) and Jenni Ali-Penttilä (third from left) are doing a BSc lab work that deals with these materials, so it was very useful for them to learn about this technique, just as it was for IMC’s Postdoctoral Researcher Sami Vuori (left) and Professor Mika Lastusaari (third from right). Thank you for the collaboration Amr + Doctoral Researcher Topias Jussila (right), and Aalto Distinguished Professor Maarit Karppinen (middle).

Dr. Minnea Tuomisto rejoined IMC as a postdoc

Dr. Minnea Tuomisto has started at IMC as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the JÄMOMAT project (“from waste to next generation molecular materials”) funded by Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation and Technology Industries of Finland Centennial Foundation. Minnea obtained her PhD in 2019 at IMC and worked for a while in our research group. After this, she moved to work for Neste as a researcher. However, now our alumnus has come back to do research until at least 31 August 2025.

Hannah’s article in Advanced Functional Materials

Dr. Hannah Byron‘s latest article “Highly Tuneable Photochromic Sodalites for Dosimetry, Security Marking and Imaging” was published in the prestigious journal Advanced Functional Materials with a whopping impact factor of 19.924! The article discusses e.g. about how modifying the structure of synthetic hackmanite enables the adjustment of its absorption maxima throughout the whole visible range, which leads to different colored, wonderful hackmanites.

The article can be read at https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/adfm.202303398

The Super Week of Hackmanites

Last week was truly a super week of hackmanites, since Sami had his defense on Monday, and Hannah on Friday. Sami’s opponent was Professor Adrian Finch from the University of St Andrews, Scotland, UK, whereas Hannah’s was Professor Mark T. Weller from Cardiff University. Professor Mika Lastusaari was appointed as the Custos in both defenses. Both events went really well, and now both Sami and Hannah are PhDs!

Hannah’s defense

MSc Hannah Byron defends her dissertation “Tuning Photochromic Sodalites Across The Visible Spectrum” in the University of Turku’s main building’s Säästöpankki hall on Friday 16 June 2023 at 12 o’clock.
